Our Origin Story

Our work began with a simple truth: too many children were struggling with the effects of trauma, and too many families were carrying that burden alone.

Through the Dawn Institute, we set out to provide specialized trauma-focused clinical care and the wraparound support that children and families need. As we walked alongside families, we learned that lasting healing does not happen in isolation, it happens within the family system. When parents and caregivers are equipped with understanding, connection, and support, children have a greater opportunity to thrive.

Yet the more families we served, the more we encountered a heartbreaking reality: many of those who needed care most could not afford it. At the same time, they often lived in communities that lacked the knowledge, resources, and specialized prevention programs needed to address trauma before it became a lifelong burden.

That reality inspired the creation of the Dawn Childhood Foundation. The Foundation exists to ensure that every child and family has access to healing, regardless of their financial circumstances. By removing barriers to care, expanding trauma-informed education, and investing in prevention and community support, we create pathways to hope and resilience for families who might otherwise be left behind.

At the center of our work is a guiding belief inspired by the buffalo. When storms come, buffalo do not turn away; they move directly through them. With intention and strength, they face what is ahead rather than staying in the storm longer than necessary. We believe healing works the same way. When families are supported to face what is painful with care and connection, they move through it rather than staying stuck.

This is the heart of Dawn: helping children and families move through the storm towards healing, connection, and hope.

Our Guiding Belief

Trauma doesn't stay contained to one child or one moment. Left unaddressed, it moves through families and generations. Dawn Childhood Foundation exists to interrupt that cycle.

That's why the Foundation brought Dawn Institute under its umbrella: connecting specialized, trauma-informed therapy with the financial access, education, and prevention work that makes healing reachable for the whole family. The Institute treats the trauma in front of us today. The Foundation invests in breaking the cycle for tomorrow.
